Liverpool F.C. supporters from around the world have considered one place to be their home away from home since 1892 and that is the Uefa 4-star Anfield Stadium located in Anfield, Liverpool, England. This famous stadium was built in 1884 and continues to this day to be the home for the football (soccer) team Liverpool F.C., although there has been some talk of a new stadium in the future.
Anfield Stadium holds an amazing 45,276 people, although during one game in 1952 there were recorded some 61,905 people in the stadium. It was later converted to an all-seating stadium in 1994 due to safety measures that came about after the Taylor Report. This report was a response to the horrendous Hillsborough disaster in which 96 people were killed and another 766 injured in a giant human crush that happened in Hillsborough stadium standing terraces. Presently the seating is broken up into four stands: Main Stand, Anfield Road, Centenary Stand and the Spion Kop.
The Kop is well known to be the best stand for supporters of the club to congregated. The Kop is filled at every game with the most loud and enthusiastic fans. The Main Stand is the oldest section, completed in1982. It includes the dressing rooms and box for club directors. The Anfield Road Stand is for the away crowd. It is agreed the keeping the fans separate at these matches is preferable.
Aside from being home to the team, Anfield has also played host to many high-profile matches and events over the years. It was used during the Euro 96 and was the location of the first international game between England and Ireland in 1889. Anfield was the finishing spot for a city marathon that took place in the mid-1920s. There were times that boxing matches were held there as well as some professional tennis. Other sports that have held matches or events at Anfield have been basketball with the Harlem Globetrotters, rugby for the 1991 World Club Challenge rugby league match and more. It is also due to host the 2015 Rugby Union World Cup.
